Though the inspiration came from decades past, the innovation behind the swimwear was incredibly modern. Moore worked with Michelle Copelman, the vice president of brand and design at Andie. They infused the one-piece suits with powermesh to add some compression to the fabric without restricting the wearer. “It was a little bit of a balancing act,” says Copelman. Each of these features is meant to act as a seamless second skin and add support. Andie’s sizing runs from 0-26, and Moore stresses that there is something for a range of body types and ages in this collection. She cites her daughters as being her swimwear soothsayers. “They keep me aware of what’s appealing to a different generation,” says Moore. “We do share [swimwear], but you know, they don’t cover the butt!” Ultimately, Moore wants to drive home that there’s a suit for everyone, no matter how much you do or do not want to reveal. “I think it exudes confidence to know that you don’t need to show a lot of skin to be sexy,” she says. “[You have] the option to feel covered, but to not have it be matronly. It still feels flirty and sexy and fun.”
Moore, who considers herself a child of the ’70s, looked to yesteryear, fuller-coverage bikinis from the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s to inform her designs. “There was something for me about exploring the idea of what is sexy and sweet and empowering that doesn’t necessarily show everything, that is a great fit, that feels comfortable,” she says. The actor had plenty to pull from, as she’s a long-time collector of vintage swimwear. “I have quite an array of pieces from the ’20s, from [suits by] Jantzen to some interesting kind of European, very obscure German swimwear-makers.” Norma Kamali’s swimdresses of the ’80s also inspired her. “The suits that she had were actual dresses that you could wear out and nobody would know that it was a swimsuit. I lived for that. Maybe just because it was clever,” she says. “That’s where the [Andie] skirt came from, with it being a skirt that you could wear with different tops.”
Demi Moore has long been a swimwear icon. Who can forget when the bombshell actor stepped out in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle wearing a barely-there triangle bikini while carrying a surfboard? Moore’s love for bathing suits has never faded. The proof is in the waterproof spandex: Today, the actor has released her first collection with the swimwear label Andie, which consists of 10 styles and ranges from $75-$155. For her design debut, Moore opted for more coverage. “So much of what I’ve seen in the last couple of years was just less and less fabric. Like how much can we show? Sometimes it leaves nothing to the imagination,” says Moore. There are still some of those pieces, albeit a bit more subtle versions, including the actor’s all-time favorite style. “I personally do tend to love a very simple triangle bikini,” she says. Some of the suits, like a white wrap skirt and a black one-piece with an extreme, diving neckline, take a more modest approach.
